In praise of the liberal arts
A Chronicle of Higher Education article describes an incipient movement within Chinese higher education to embrace the heretofore forbidden liberal arts. Seems that just turning out technically qualified engineers and scientists is not enough--to exercise judgment, creativity and leadership even technical professionals need a grounding in the humanities. Interesting that this news comes as many U.S. universities and public K-12 districts are curtailing just what the Chinese are finding it necessary to add.
