Another Sign of the Apocalypse
The Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA is out with data (reported here in the Harvard Crimson) tracking what entering university freshmen (first-year students) say is the objective of their schooling.
Something has shifted in the zeitgeist! And the shift began well ahead of the 2008-09 economic crisis--the "conventional wisdom" moment when sensibilities changed about the employability of college graduates. In fact, the moment the two lines crossed seems to have happened back in 1978-79. Since then, it has been onward and upward for "being well-off financially" as an objective.
