Unbundling the Future

I have been saying for some time that unbundling is in our future, and this item from higher education futurist Jeffrey Selingo supports this view. Selingo points to a SXSWedu presentation by Jeff Young from the Chronicle of Higher Education saying that Airbnb and Uber are models for what education might look like in the future.A realistic scenario for some private, independent K-12 schools is one of a la carte programming, where students take some classes at one school, others at another school and perhaps play sports at a third place. There will be a few schools that successfully hold the line on an all-or-nothing approach--most likely the dominant players in a given market--while most will join the unbundled world. The winners will be those schools that figure out how to use the unbundled approach to their advantage; e.g., to lower costs while still offering students and families a broad range of programming.
