Risk Mitigation is a Core Act of Governance
Jakarta--There is one area where some international schools exceed their U.S. independent school counterparts: risk mitigation. Perhaps because so many international schools are in volatile regions (from political, military or geological perspectives), I hear more discussion of contingencies and see better planning for the inevitable surprises. There will be black swans, to be sure, but the exercise of planning for more predictable disruptive events itself helps prepare schools for the unforeseeable.
So, how would you respond if enrollment undershot expectations by 10%? Or if annual giving reached only 25% of goal? Or if a tornado it your campus just days before the start of the school year? Or if the evening news in your city breaks a story about alleged sexual molestations in your building? Worth thinking about.
