How does your governance stack up?

Data in this week's Chronicle of Philanthropy (based on a study by BoardSource) reveals a disconnect between how governing boards view themselves and how they are viewed by the organization's CEO's.

Not only do CEO's rate their boards lower than the boards rate themselves (legends in their own minds?), but for both the areas of fund raising and board diversity are at the bottom of the ratings, followed closely by community relations and outreach.

Seems like boards take seriously--and perform relatively well at--their fiduciary accountabilities, but come up short on the ambassadorial and philanthropic dimensions.  In my experience, the external stuff, especially fund raising, is much harder than scrutinizing operations.  And, for many trustees, it is far less fun.
