AI and Us

Pew Foundation data show that "[a]bout half of Americans say the increased use of artificial intelligence in daily life makes them feel more concerned than excited." It is hard for us to avoid the suspicion that this is partially, if not substantially, the result of heavy media attention highlighting the fear side of AI's hypothetical future.

With various countries and even Pope Francis calling for tighter regulation of AI, the transformative potential of this technology seems destined to be limited by human fears. One wonders whether the Pew data would skew the other way had the coverage been more positive?
