A Week of International School Governance

Kuala Lumpur--I depart K-L tomorrow for Bangkok and three days of governance workshops for the EARCOS Leadership Conference. Day One is for board chairs and heads and focuses on their unique relationship as co-leaders of the school. Three years ago, in Kota Kinabalu, a board chair and head attended the day-long workshop and sat across the room from each other, thereby transmitting a wealth of diagnostic information without saying a word.

Two metaphors for the board chair/head relationship occur to me: that of a team, with all the attendant possibilities and pitfalls of Pat Lencioni's Five Dysfunctions of Team model, and that of a marriage--easy to get into, difficult, painful and costly to get out of, and requiring much maintenance to keep healthy. Are there other metaphors that occur to you?
